  • Whilst referring to the introduction of gay marriage which was pledged by both major political parties in their respective electoral manifestos,  the Cana Movement affirms the following.

    1.        Every person, regardless of his sexual orientation or life preferences should be treated with utmost dignity.

    2.        Equality before the law should not be a pretext to deny differentiation. Whereas it is the legislator’s duty to regulate different forms of relationships, this is not a justification to redefine marriage or attempt to alter the nature of marriage. Marriage was, is and remains a life- long union between one man and one woman which by its nature is intended towards the procreation of children and the well-being of spouses. Neither should the proposed law promote deletion of references to man and woman, husband and wife, both of which have important and complementary roles in the procreation and bringing up of children.

    3.        Laws which distinguish between different forms of relationships such as co-habitation, civil unions and marriage are not discriminatory. On the contrary they acknowledge and respect differences, particularly in a society which celebrates pluralism and diversity. 

    4.        The State is duty bound to consider the best interests of children. Gay marriage discriminates against children, as it deprives them of having both a father and a mother.

    5.        Members of Parliament are duty bound to consider whether the proposed law exceeds the electoral mandate. In fact besides introducing gay marriage, it appears that the draft law is the precursor to practices such as gamete donation and surrogacy which consider children as a right of parents rather than a gift of life. 

    6.        The Cana Movement would like to appeal to politicians to continue introducing measures to strengthen families. In so doing, legislators should seek to enact just laws, which respect the truth, promote human dignity and the good of society as a whole.

  • Il-Moviment Kana, filwaqt li jinnota illi ser titressaq liġi dwar iż-żwieġ bejn persuni tal-istess sess kif kien imwiegħed fil-programm elettorali taż-żewġ partiti kbar, jemmen illi:

    1.        Kull persuna kemm eterosesswali kif ukoll omosesswali jew ta’ xi orjentament sesswali ieħor, għandha tiġi trattata b’rispett u b’dinjita’;

    2.        Filwaqt li huwa d-dmir ta’ kull leġislatur li jirregola d-drittijiet u l-obbligi bejn persuni f’forom differenti ta’ relazzjonjiet, dan m’għandux jagħti lok għat-tibdil fid-definizzjoni jew fin-natura taż-żwieġ li hija għotja sħiħa u dejjiema,  bejn raġel wieħed u mara waħda, li minn natura tagħha tfittex il-ġid tal-miżżewġin kif ukoll it-tnissil u l-edukazzjoni tal-ulied. Lanqas m’għandu jwassal għat-tneħħija għal kull referenza għar-“raġel” u “mara”, “missier” u “omm” li t-tnejn għandhom rwoli importanti u kumplementarji fit-tnissil u t-trobbija tal-ulied;

    3.        L-Ugwaljanza quddiem il-liġi m’għandhiex tkun pretest biex niċħdu d-differenzi u l-kumplimentarjeta’.  Liġijiet li jiddistingwu bejn forom diversi ta’ relazzjonijiet bħal m’huma il-koabitazzjoni, l-unjoni ċivili u ż-żwieġ m’humiex diskriminatorji, imma jirrikkonixxu u jirrispettaw id-differenzi, l-aktar fi żmien fejn niċċelebraw il-pluraliżmu u d-diversita;

    4.        Fir-regolamentazzjoni tar-relazzjonijiet personali, l-istat għandu l-obbligu illi jqis l-aħjar interessi tat-tfal. Żwieġ bejn koppja tal-istess sess jiddiskrimina kontra l-ulied il-għaliex iċaħħadhom milli jkollhom kemm omm kif ukoll missier;  

    5.        Id-deputati parlamentari għandhom id-dover jikkunsidraw jekk l-abbozz tal-liġi kif propost jeċċedix il-mandat elettorali, il-għaliex barra ż-żwieġ bejn persuni tal-istess sess jidher li ser ikun il-prekursur ta’ prattiċi bħal m’huma d-donazzjoni tal-isperma u l-kiri tal-ġuf illi jqisu t-tfal bħala dritt tal-ġenituri u mhux bħala don tal-ħajja;

    6.        Il-Moviment Kana jappella lill-politiċi biex ikomplu jieħdu miżuri favur it-tisħiħ tal-familja.  Dan għandu jsir,  b’mod ġust, b’rispett lejn id-dinjita ta’ kull persuna, lejn il-kumplimentarjeta’ tal-mara u r-ragel, lejn il-ġid tas-socjeta’ u lejn il-verita’.
