  • US Governors Sign Pro-Life Legislation

  • Indiana

Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana signed a bill to protect unborn babies from abortion based on disability, sex or race. It becomes the second state after North Dakota to ban abortions based on a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. House Bill 1337 also requires that the remains of aborted babies be cremated or buried and that abortionists keep hospital admitting privileges current.

A former actively pro-life Member of Congress, Governor Pence issued a statement that said in part, "Throughout my public career, I have stood for the sanctity of life. HEA 1337 is a comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life, which is why I signed it into law today. I believe that a society can be judged by how it deals with its most vulnerable-the aged, the infirm, the disabled and the unborn. HEA 1337 will ensure the dignified final treatment of the unborn and prohibits abortions that are based only on the unborn child's sex, race, color, national origin, ancestry, or disability, including Down syndrome." He concluded, "By enacting this legislation, we take an important step in protecting the unborn, while still providing an exception for the life of the mother. I sign this legislation with a prayer that God would continue to bless these precious children, mothers and families."

    Florida

Florida Governor Rick Scott has signed into law a bill to defund Planned Parenthood. The bill followed the series of undercover investigations demonstrating Planned Parenthood's involvement in the selling of aborted babies' body parts. The new law redirects state funding from Planned Parenthood in Florida to comprehensive health centers. The law also requires that abortionists have hospital admitting privileges or patient transfer agreements and increases abortion clinic inspection requirements.

Pro-life groups celebrated the new law. "Abortionists will finally be held to the same standard as all other physicians who perform invasive procedures in a non-hospital setting by the requirement to have admitting privileges or a transfer agreement with a nearby hospital," says Ingrid Delgado of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops. "It is incomprehensible that opponents suggest the bill makes women less safe." Abortion advocates are threatening to challenge the law in court.
